Storyline

This short will explore the origins and nuances of the high five, bringing to life the unique legacy of the gesture and the story of one of its unsung originators. The filmmakers will tell the story of Glenn Burke and his origins as a baseball prodigy, his time in the majors and spontaneous "invention" of the gesture. Using this moment, the story then pivots to chronicle the simultaneous spread of the high five as both celebratory and political gesture alongside the professional and personal decline of Glenn Burke. The Story Behind the High Five

30 for 30 Shorts: The High Five (2014)

Fun documentary taking a look at how the High Five came to be. Legend has it that Los Angeles Dodgers player Glenn Burke is the first one to do this when teammate Dusty Baker hit his 30th home run of the year. The documentary starts off talking about the High Five but then it focuses in on Burke who was pretty much kicked off the team because the owners found out he was gay. The documentary features interviews with people like Baker as well as reporters as they discuss the importance of the High Five and how the man who pretty much started it ended up dying without even being able to raise his arms. This is another very good entry in the series because it tells a fairly simple story of the High Five but then it tells an even bigger story behind it. I had never known about this story so it was certainly interesting and the filmmakers do a very good job at telling the story in just about ten-minutes.
